Digital technology is now so deeply embedded in everyday life, it’s sometimes easy to forget it’s even there. But the world’s ever-expanding use of technology comes with a cost that’s not always evident to the end user: the carbon footprint. Since 2007, the ICT sector’s share of the world’s carbon footprint has more than doubled from 1.5% to 4%. And the numbers are still growing. Some analysts think ICT could be heading towards 14% of global emissions by 2040. That’s all the more likely if, as expected, we continue to see ever greater uptake of energy-intensive technologies like AI and blockchain. Consider that Bitcoin is reputed to consume more energy in a year than the entire nation of Switzerland. More efficient solutions are urgently needed.

Combining Tech and sustainability

Technology and sustainability are two areas that are often thought of as being at odds with each other. Technology is often seen as something that is harmful to the environment, while sustainability is seen as something that is good for the environment. However, there are ways to unite these two areas so that they can work together to benefit the environment. One way to unite technology and sustainability is to use technology to help achieve sustainability goals. For example, technology can be used to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It can also be used to help reduce the amount of waste that is produced.Another way to unite these two areas is to use technology to make sustainable practices more efficient. For example, technology can be used to help farmers use less water for irrigation or to help factories use less energy to produce products. Finally, it is important to remember that technology is not always the enemy of sustainability. There are many technologies that can help us live more sustainable lives. For example, solar panels and wind turbines are technologies that can help us produce energy in a sustainable way.By uniting technology and sustainability, we can create a world that is better for the environment and for our future.
